Lewistown
is family friendly
Lewistown
is a great place for children and families!
From
the excellent prenatal and obstetric care offered at Central Montana
Medical Center to the strength of our local school system, Lewistown
is a community where childhood is highly valued.
Families
in need of child care need only look as far as the local HRDC office
for information and referrals to the wide variety of child care
facilities available in this area.
An
assortment of preschool programs are available, as well, providing
a great start for a young childs development and education.
Once
children hit school age, Lewistown really shines. Lewistown Public
Schools are some of the best in the state and consistently stand
out when compared on the state and national level.
A
well-rounded curriculum, combined with an abundance of extracurricular
offerings, provides a wealth of opportunities and experiences for
youngsters as they make their first steps into the world.
In
standardized achievement tests, our students consistently perform
well above state and national levels.
And
it isnt unusual to see local athletes competing in state tournaments.
The
high school science bowl team has placed in the top 20 in the nation
for two years running, even though its competitors are often students
whose primary educational focus has been placed on science and math.
And
many take advantage of the variety of activities offered emphasizing
music and the other fine arts, as well as vocational programs such
as FFA, FHA and others.
Lewistown
boasts an excellent teaching staff consisting of 104 teachers, approximately
two-thirds of which have attained masters degrees in their
field.
And
the community plays a significant role in the success of the school,
as well, through its generous support.
We
really appreciate the community support for our schools, said
superintendent Conrad Robertson. Whether talking about parents
or the public in general, we see far more community support and
involvement toward our school than Ive seen in any other community
in Montana.
For
those older students seeking to expand their knowledge base, brush
up job skills, work toward a degree or prepare for their GED, Lewistowns
Community Education program is available to assist with those efforts.
All
in all, Lewistown is fertile ground for students of all ages anxious
to explore the world and develop their talents and skills.
Its
never too late!
The
Community Education office provides a wide variety of course work
for the adults of Central Montana.
Each
year, the Lewistown School District offers a comprehensive program
of educational, social, recreational and cultural opportunities
for adults aged 16 and older.
Course
work ranges from business and computers to health, sports and fitness,
to landscaping, cooking, creative writing, historic tours and much
more!
The
Adult Basic Education program provides free individualized instruction
for those needing help in basic academic subjects, job skills, basic
computer skills or GED preparation. These classes are available
year round and the GED exam is offered once each month during the
school year.
In
conjunction with Educational Opportunities for Central Montana,
college courses are offered locally from the Montana university
system, including general education core classes needed for any
degree program, classes toward a business or nursing degree and
higher education for teachers.
The
Community Education office is located in the Lincoln Building at
215 Seventh Ave. S. in Lewistown, phone (406) 538-9022. Office hours
are 8 a.m.-noon and 1-4 p.m., weekdays.

Agriculture
This
is down home country
Seeds
planted in Central Montana are supported by the roots of agriculture.
For
years Central Montana agricultural producers have been carrying
on a tradition.
Early
in the morning the local cafes are home to the traditional cowpoke
or farmer, each beginning the day with a good stout cup of coffee
and a few swap stories about their run of luck the past week.
Together
they are determined to preserve their legacies and the resources
of the ag industry.
Many
Central Montana producers are second-, third- and fourth-generation
farmers and ranchers who continue a tradition from generation to
generation.
Central
Montana is one of the richest and most productive areas in the state
of Montana. With 1,233 farms and ranches spanning the area, agriculture
is the backbone of the economy.
The
top ag industries in the area are beef cattle and grain production.
Fergus County ranks second in the state for winter wheat production;
third in the state for livestock and alfalfa production; and fifth
in the state for barley and oats production.
Producers
from Fergus, Petroleum and Judith Basin counties averaged $117 million
in cash receipts in 1998, ranking 10th in the state. Alternative
crops such as canola, buckwheat, waxy barley, safflower and sunflowers
are also produced by a select number of producers.
Central
Montana is also proud to be a sponsor of one of the nations
most riveting PRCA rodeos. The CM Russell Stampede, held in Stanford,
is a good ol western family event bringing top name bull riders,
barrel racers, broncs and calf ropers to Central Montana, complemented
by a large variety of artists.
The
Campaign to Reclaim Rural America also got its roots started in
Central Montana. It has become a national force.
For
more information, call Don Taylor at (406) 423-5297 or Dale Pfau
at (406) 538-5330 or (406) 538-9408.
Ag
producers are proud to be ranchers and farmers, and as they continue
to do business on a handshake, they hope to be securing another
100 years for their legacies.
