Key Club sponsored the “Freezin’ for a Reason Jump” on Jan. 12. Key Club and Fergus High School students collected approximately 300 cans of food for the local Food Bank, for which some brave and very cold teachers agreed to plunge into Spring Creek for the cause. Young Republican lawmakers chart their own course in Montana Legislature

When the secretary of the Montana House Judiciary Committee read down the list of the members’ names, recording their votes, every Republican on the committee said “yes” to House Bill 112, a measure seeking to block transgender women and girls from competing in women’s sports at school.

That is, every Republican except Rep. Mallerie Stromswold, R-Billings. In an interview, Stromswold—the youngest member of the 67th Montana Legislature—said she’s got a bit of a Libertarian streak.

“As long as you’re not hurting your neighbors, I don’t care what you do,” she said.

Heath Rural Fire District annual meeting is Monday

It’s time again for the Heath Rural Fire District Annual Meeting, Monday, Feb. 1 at 7 p.m. at the Heath Community Hall. Please follow Social Distancing; hand sanitizer will be available. Attendees are encouraged to wear a mask.

The annual meeting agenda will include a sharing of the minutes from last year’s meeting, the 2021 budget and financial statement, a review of 2020 and plans for 2021. There will be the Fire Chief’s report and recognition of firefighters, election of officers . and an opportunity for members to share thoughts with the Board and membership.

Backcountry Horsemen Chapter to meet

The Central Montana Chapter of the Backcountry Horsemen meets the first Monday of each month at the Sheriff’s complex at 6:30 p.m. The next meeting is Monday, Feb. 1. The meeting is open to the public.

Shyanne Ricks holds up the first-place trophy for winning the Lewistown Junior High School Spelling Bee on Friday. Ricks is a 7th grader at LJHS. There were 14 students to begin the bee, but after five rounds, Ricks was the only student left on the stage. Two of her winning words were “devout” and “Vancouver.” There will not be a county bee this year, so Ricks will now be able to compete at the state spelling bee later this spring. Lewis & Clark Elementary School also held its spelling bee on Friday. 

Chamber seeking ‘Lewistown love stories’

“We want to know why you love living in Lewistown,” said Chamber Director Jo McCauley. “There are great people, businesses and groups, but what’s the one thing that makes it unique to you?”

Rosendale casts historic vote, receives committee assignments

On a phone call with the News-Argus on Jan. 22, U.S. Representative Matt Rosendale expressed concern about some of the actions taken by the new administration, including the withdrawal of the permit for the Keystone XL pipeline.

“With the withdrawal of the Keystone XL pipeline permit, it’s tens of millions of dollars lost for Montana and employment for so many [people],” said Rosendale.

“Quite frankly, it’s just another demonstration of this administration’s ability to eliminate our country’s energy dominance and compromise our economy and national security.”
