Busy weekend coming up for the arts on Main Street

There are a lot of big arts-and-entertainment-related events taking place this weekend in Lewistown, and all members of the community are encouraged to go check them out.

 

Friday

Lewistown native Eryn Bent is returning from Santa Fe, New Mexico to play a show in her hometown during her “Still Somewhere in the Gray” tour. Bent’s performance will take place at the Loomis Gallery located at 221 West Main Street. Local artist Charlie Denison will open.

Reception this Friday
“On Which We Stand,” a collective of emerging contemporary Native American artists, will be on display during the month of October, with a reception this Friday, from 5–7 p.m. The artists represented in this show are Ben Pease, John Pepion, Louis Still Smoking, Lauren Monroe and Robert Martinez. Each of these young men actively produces artwork that represents their heritage, their tribe and their individual statements translated onto a two dimensional page.

Open mic night turns 100 Thursday

One hundred open mic nights.

That’s no easy task.

But Dave Rummans, a Lewistown native and singer/songwriter, has made it happen thanks to cooperation from the Rising Trout Cafe, Lola’s and a dedicated group of local musicians. This Thursday Lewistown’s open mic reaches centennial status.

‘Into the Beautiful’ poetry contest deadline two weeks away

The third annual “Into the Beautiful” poetry contest deadline is only two weeks away. It is free to enter, and open to Montana residents of all ages. This is a publication opportunity.
The theme this year is “Daring.”
All contest entries will be considered for publication in Volume 3 of our Poetry by Montana Artists series, “Into the Beautiful: Daring.”

The scarecrows are coming! Stanford holiday festival set for Saturday

Beware! The scarecrows are coming to Stanford early this year. They are set to arrive on Saturday, Oct. 8. That’s just a short few days away.
And they aren’t coming alone: They bring with them a festival of fun, including the fifth annual chili cook-off, a craft show, the Scare the Crow “Outta” Cancer Fun Run/Walk and the Judith Basin Chamber’s Pumpkin Paint, Carve and Chuck.

Arts and the written word collide at Verbal-Visual event

Artists and writers gather for the annual Verbal-Visual event on Saturday, Oct. 1, 6 p.m. at Brooks Market. The event is sponsored by the Lewistown Writers Group.

The banquet marks the end of a several month long process in which writers pen poems and short stories on a theme, and artists, working from the writers’ pieces, create drawings, paintings or sculptures.

Chamber marking 30 years of ag appreciation tours

or three decades, Lewistown residents have boarded a bus bound for rural parts of Fergus County. The goal? To introduce “townies” to the goals and aspirations, as well as the trials and tribulations, of farmers and ranchers. 

This year the tour will be held on Wednesday, Oct. 5, starting at 8 a.m. and lasting most of the day.

Montana Painter’s Alliance to paint in Lewistown area

Central Montana’s beautiful scenery and friendly atmosphere have attracted a group of talented Montana Plein Air artists for a long weekend of outdoor, onsite painting.  Starting Thursday, Sept. 22 through Sunday, Sept. 25, area residents may notice easels, canvases, paintbrushes, umbrellas, and about two dozen artists scattered to paint the landscape in a variety of mediums and styles.

Christmas Cantata organizes for 2016 performances

The first rehearsal for the 2016 Central Montana Christmas Cantata will be held Wednesday, Sept. 28.

Vocalists, especially basses and tenors, interested in taking part in this year’s performances are asked to attend the rehearsal, which will be held at 7:30 p.m. at First Presbyterian Church, 215 5th Avenue South.

Chokecherry Jam fun for all ages

“And the band played on” is a fitting way to describe Friday’s Chokecherry Jam in downtown Lewistown.

The weather wasn’t ideal, but Intermission – a Helena-based band featuring brothers Billy and Gary Wagner – got things started and kept it going, playing a wide array of country, folk, rock and blues.

“The band was great,” Fergus County 4-H Program Assistant and show co-organizer Jennifer Saunders said. “They played a fun variety.”

Saunders, who has been involved in this fundraiser for the past three years, said the show was again a success.
