Charlotte Ann Hollenback Steiner, a native of Central Montana, passed away March 12, 2022 in Anacortes, Wash., due to infirmities of old age. She was born on Sept. 22, 1916, in Moore, Mont. Her parents Ben and Mary (McMillan) Hollenback ranched west of Buffalo in Judith Basin County, where Charlotte grew up. She and her siblings rode horseback to attend nearby country schools until she finished eighth grade. With Charlotte and several other students approaching high school, her father and other members of the school board manufactured a home-designed bus body on an old farm truck to transport the students the 10 miles to Buffalo. Charlotte and her sister, Judith, also rode horseback the 11 miles to Straw to participate in 4-H meetings.
