In 1962, Montana Wilderness Association founders Ken and Florence Baldwin set out with a group of 40 hikers along a trail to Table Mountain in the Spanish Peaks, hoping to build grassroots support for protecting wild country. This year will be the 55th consecutive summer in which MWA volunteers have led hikes into special places to continue to build appreciation and support for Montana’s wildlands, and to show the need and benefits of “Keeping It Wild.” Hikers, and all who enjoy the out-of-doors, are invited to learn about free “Summer Walks” in Central Montana this summer, at a kickoff event at 6 p.m., Tuesday, April 25 at the Lewistown Public Library in the upstairs meeting room. Sponsored by the Montana Wilderness Association, this free event features reports from local members who volunteered to lead hikes in our area. A new film short “Prairie Wildlands near Crooked Creek” will also be screened, accompanied by an update on work in the Breaks by MWA’s Central Montana Field Director Mark Good. Door prizes (courtesy Don’s and Montana Wilderness Association), complimentary beverages and light refreshments will be provided. “With over 100 hikes across the state this year there will be something for everyone, from easy family hikes to strenuous trail stewardship projects,” said Laurie Lohrer, Montana Wilderness Association member. “Whether you want to meander along and photograph flowers or scramble to a remote peak, you can find a suitable trip this year on one of MWA’s summer walks, and they’re all free.” The event and all hikes are free of charge and are open to members and non-members alike. MWA members get hike previews and the chance to sign up early. Hike registration for members begins mid April and general signups in late April. Interested persons can join MWA online at wildmontana.org. For more info on April 26, kickoff event, call Dave at 538-7121.
