August is a busy month here at the Lewistown Art Center. We’ll be hosting a new exhibition, an experimental dance performance and documentary, a comedy duo, and a plethora of local authors. Oh! And we’ll be hosting kids’ camps, making Chokecherry infusions at Social Night, and displaying fabulous new products from local artists. We’re embracing this last bit of summer with everything we’ve got, so please join us in celebrating the rich culture of Central Montana by attending one (or all) of these thrilling events.

The Margie Wilkin’s Gallery

Join us on Aug. 11 for the opening of Rowan Nyman’s exhibition of nature photography.  Nyman’s passion for photography began with his love of fly-fishing and all things natural. For the past 25 years, he has meandered through the greater Yellowstone ecosystem, Montana, and other wild landscapes throughout the west in search of good fishing and great photographs.

Nyman’s photographs have been featured in fly-fishing publications such as “American Angler and “Northwest Fly Fishing”, as well as “Montana Outdoors” and other publications. The photographs he’ll bring to Lewistown explore the multitudes of natural landscapes in the West, as well as the personalities, majesty, and beauty of the natural creatures that populate them.

Join us from 5-7 p.m. on Aug. 11 to meet the artist and, as always, enjoy some refreshments at the Lewistown Art Center.

Adam McKinney and “HaMapah/The Map”

Join us for a once-in-a-lifetime dance event on Saturday, Aug. 12, from 5-7 p.m., as renowned dancer and instructor, Adam McKinney, explains his ongoing project “HaMapah / The Map” and treats a Lewistown audience to a selection of dance from the work. It is an ongoing, multimedia dance journey that revolves around Adam’s African American, Native American, and Jewish heritages. Originally, the work premiered in New York City, but the current iteration reenvisions the dance and choreography project as a documentary film.

Together with DNAWORKS co-director, Daniel Banks, and filmmaker Laura Bustillos Jáquez, Adam is currently in the process of traveling to his ancestral homes to interview community members and reimagine the choreography and project as it is informed by historical spaces.

Adam will be “in residence” at the Lewistown Art Center from Aug. 10-16, conducting interviews and getting to know the home of his great-grandparents, Harry and Sylvia Alweis, of Harlowton, Mont.. The Alweis family opened “The Hub” department store in 1917, and Joe and Jessie Alweis of Lewistown (Adam is their great, great nephew) opened “The Hub” in Lewistown, in the same building that holds the Lewistown Art Center today.

Join us on Saturday, Aug. 12, for a brief performance and presentation of “HaMapah/The Map,” to meet McKinney, Banks, and Jáquez, and for light refreshments at the Lewistown Art Center.

Summer Fun Camp

There are two fun-filled weeks left of kids’ camps to round out this busy summer, and still time to register. Aug. 7-9 we’ll be exploring sound and music through creative games and art projects, and Aug. 14-16 we’ll dive into the world of drama, theater and puppetry. Camps are open to kids in grades K-8; everybody is welcome regardless of “artistic skill” or experience. Please pre-register online at, or give us a call at 535-8278 for more information.

Comedy Night with the LAC: Gingers on Ice

Bring your laughin’ pants and join us for Comedy Night: Gingers on Ice at the Slater building on Thursday, Aug. 26.

The LAC is thrilled to announce the arrival of Gingers on Ice in Central Montana, a comedy duo that hails from Missoula. Gingers on Ice is composed of Jacob Godbey (a Lewistown native) and Alex Tait. Together, the two put on a comedy experience not to be missed, featuring a “strategic blend of sketch, improv, stand-up comedy, and original video.” This inventive and original show is always evolving, so be sure that you don’t miss this one-time Lewistown performance.

Ticket includes a gourmet hot dog bar at 6 p.m., local singer/songwriter Charlie Dennison’s performance at 6:30 p.m., and the Gingers on Ice comedy experience at 7 p.m., on Thursday, Aug. 24.

The Lewistown Art Center is grateful to ArtWorks, our volunteer group, for their sponsorship of this event.

Lewistown Author’s Event

Don’t forget about our local Author’s Event on Saturday, Aug. 26 from 2-5 p.m. Join Marcia Losh and Runi Arnold for “Children’s Hour” from 2-3 p.m., featuring a reading of their book “If Everybody Did It,” and a special paper collage workshop with Runi. From 3-5 p.m., join us for light refreshments and live music as we meet our local authors. Several authors will be on hand to sign copies of their texts and answer questions. While the roster isn’t finalized, we’re pleased to announce that Marcia Losh, Runi Arnold, Maxine Melton, and Lisa Ferguson will all be joining us.
