Redbird shortstop and pitcher Andrew Lalum had a fantastic tournament over the weekend. Andrew’s bat has been sizzling since he was moved up into the second spot in the Redbirds’ batting order. In his 15 official bats in five games during the Harold Gjerde Tournament, Andrew was 11-15 for a .733 batting average. He also had 11 RBIs in five games during the tournament played Thursday through Sunday at Ryan Sparks Field here in Lewistown.
Andrew got off to a slow start in the Redbirds’ win over the Billings Angels on Thursday. He went hitless in his only official at bat in the contest, but walked twice.
In the Redbirds win over the Glasgow Reds, Andrew began his terror at the plate by getting two hits, including a double, walking once, and getting hit by a pitch. In this game, Andrew had three RBIs, scored three times and stole three bases.
Andrew’s solid hitting performance continued in the Redbirds’ win over Powell, Wyoming. In four at bats, he had three hits, scored three times and had four RBIs. He added two more stolen bases.
In the Redbirds’ win over Richland County (Sidney), Andrew had four hits, including another double, two RBIs and scored twice.
In the Redbirds’ only loss of the tournament, 5-6 against the Gallatin Valley Outlaws, Andrew finished the tournament with two hits, two runs, one RBI, a stolen base and walked twice.
In the 40 games the Redbirds have played so far in the season, Andrew’s batting average stands at an impressive 0.463. He has 56 hits, including 13 doubles, five triples and three home runs. He has been walked 32 times, but has gone down on strikes only six times. Andrew has 56 RBIs throughout the season so far, and has scored 46 runs. He adds 18 stolen bases. His on-base percentage is an impressive .584 and has a slugging percentage of .727.
On the mound, Lalum currently has a 7-1 win-loss record and an ERA of 3.29. Lalum pitched all seven innings in the Birds’ win over Billings on Saturday. In the win, Lalum gave up just two runs on four hits. Only two of his runs were earned. In addition, Andrew struck out eight Angels and walked only two.
