Athletes of the Week

Cole Ayers

Sam Butcher

This week’s athletes of the week were members of the Fergus High School football team. The two worked “in the trenches” on both the offensive and defensive lines for Coach Vic Feller, and both seniors were named to first-team all-conference squads on both offense and defense.
Sam Butcher had a total of 46 tackles on defense for the season. Those tackles included 30 solo tackles and 16 assists. In addition, Butcher had one quarterback sack, two quarterback hurries and a fumble recovery.
Cole Ayers had 42 tackles, 27 solo and 15 assists, on defense for Fergus. He also had a quarterback sack and a quarterback hurry.
No stats are kept for the offensive line, but any time a Fergus runner was able to gain yardage on the ground or the quarterback was able to complete a pass, much of the credit needs to go to the offensive linemen. The job of the offensive lineman is to open holes for running backs and to protect the quarterback when he drops back to pass.
Butcher and Ayers are also outstanding students in the classroom at Fergus High School.
