Belgrade wins Tip-Off Tournament

The Lady Panthers of Belgrade served notice to the other 10 teams in the Eastern and Central A that they may be the team to beat this year in volleyball competition. The Lady Panthers sailed through pool play on Friday defeating Custer County (Miles City) 20-15, 20-11; Havre 20-8, 20-7; and Hardin 20-19, 20-12.
On Saturday in bracket play, Belgrade defeated Custer County, 25-22, 25-15 and Billings Central, 21-25, 25-22, 15-4 to advance to the championship match against Billings Central. The Lady Panthers were able to defeat the Lady Rams in a fiercely competitive battle, 25-21, 22-25 and 15-13.

Young Fergus team loses out to Billings Central
Meanwhile a young Golden Eagle team played well on Friday and finished first in Pool A. Fergus played without returning starter Mikayla Comes at the setting position. Comes, who is nursing a slight hip injury, was held out of competition as a precautionary measure. She should be able to return to action at the Electric City Volleyball Tournament in Great Falls on September 9-10. Filling in for Comes was junior Bailey Collins.Fergus Coach Tara Taylor started senior Carley Carpenter, juniors Haydn Potter, Ajiah Ross, Hannah Hayes, and sophomore Anna Zimmer along with Collins. Seeing plenty of playing time on defense was senior Dani Gapay and junior Jade Phelps. Phelps played the libero position for the Golden Eagles.
In Friday’s pool play, Fergus defeated Park 20-7, 20-8; Sidney 20-18, 20-14; Dawson County (Glendive) 20-18, 20-17; and Browning 20-11, 20-10.
Saturday, the Golden Eagles had a first-round bye before dropping a tough match to Havre 25-22, 23-25, 13-15. Fergus came back to defeat Sidney 23-25, 25-18, 15-9 and Dawson County 25-21, 25-22. Billings Central put the Eagles out of the tournament by defeating them 25-18, 25-19.
