Have the itch to go out and garden? Why not garden for a cause? Alpine Floral Greenhouse and Nursery is hosting the third annual Blossoms and Vines this Saturday to help raise money for the Central Montana Youth Mentoring Program.

Program Director Cheryl Bannes laid out the afternoon’s schedule.

“What we do is we have five workshops, 30-40 minutes long, that run concurrently,” she said.

This means participants can attend all of the workshops, each of which is related to gardening. This year’s Blossoms and Vines will include beginning beekeeping and alternative gardening techniques, as well as floral headpieces from real flowers, planting according to seasons and zones and drying flowers and crafts.

Bannes added the experience goes beyond workshops. The afternoon will feature three silent auction baskets, an optional wine pull and even the chance to start your own garden.

“That’s one thing we are doing different that I think will be fun,” she said. “We will have a display area where you plant a seed and start a garden.”

Participants will be able to plant a seed of their choice in a pot to take home.

This is Blossoms and Vines’ third year, according to Bannes, and it’s grown quite a following.

“What everyone has said about this event is, it’s really fun,” she said. “I’m hoping we have 60-70 attend.”

A bigger turnout means more help for Bannes and the Central Montana Youth Mentoring Program.

“The money from this event will be used to provide support materials for students when they are mentors,” she said.

Bannes listed journals, training materials and coupons to local businesses as just a few of the things event proceeds would help buy. She added the fundraiser was especially important because the mentoring program is an independent nonprofit, and receives no federal or state monies.

Bannes hopes Blossom and Vines draws a large crowd and helps her organization continue to provide its free service.

“That’s really the goal, to form that bond of friendship between a mentor and mentee,” she said.
