Hello, from the STEM room. As many of you know STEM stands for Science, Technology, Engineering and Math. These are things we use in everyday life, and which are ever so important tools in career opportunities now. Reading blue prints, using a ruler, and precision cutting/hand dexterity are just a few of the basic skills we try to teach our kids. In the STEM room some of the projects I do to implement these are cutting out and putting together things like stars and astronauts and decorating them, and designing a dream house or dream club on paper, rulers required.

On occasion I will bring in an old object and ask them how we could repurpose it. Right now I have a standing three-bulb lamp that has all of its “guts” out. I want them to think outside the box and recreate it into another object.

“How will it work?”

“What could we use?”

“Will it be stable enough?”

My third-sixth graders are discovering the importance of stability and security through the spaceships they built. I hung them all up and now some of them are falling apart.

“How could that be built differently?”

“Is it important to take your time instead of rushing through it?”

Trying to get children interested in certain projects and how they relate to STEM can be a challenge at times.

That being said... We were lucky enough to get invited to visit a local industrial company called Spika Design and Manufacturing. Our third-sixth graders got a guided tour through the facility and got a little taste of what STEM class is comparable to. They were interested in what they were being told and asked many questions. I even heard some oohs and aahs.

At the end of our tour, third grade got to put plastic helicopters together and fourth-sixth graders got to put together a gear board and see how gears work. Helicopters you ask? I was awed as well -- this fabulous company designs and builds huge platforms that many companies use when building helicopters and other aircraft. Their equipment is all over the globe.

Hopefully now some of the kids will be more interested in activities and learn something from what we do. We are all trying to prepare our kids for the future, and basic skills are becoming lost skills. So, thank you, Spika Design and Manufacturing for a great insight on one option for future careers.

Hello from the Club.

We ended September with a Parent and Board Engagement night where the staff hosted a Progressive Dinner with a twist: Upon signing into the Club, you were asked to roll a dice and whatever number you rolled you started your dinner in that room. So some had the chance to start their dinner with dessert first, while some got to start with an appetizer. From that room they rolled another dice and went to another room.

We had a total of nine different rooms with different courses of the meal. It was a great time for conversing and meeting parents and board members. Watch for our next one. Where else do you get the chance to eat dessert first? A huge thank you to all that attended and made this event such a success.

October is upon us now, and we have a lot going on this month for activities. On the 11th, 22 of our kiddos painted pumpkins with the residents at Caslan Living.  The Club closed Oct. 20th and 21st so our staff could attend training in Missoula. On the 27th we hosted our “Lights on After School” Fall Festival. Our Fall Festival consisted of the staff designing a scarecrow and the kids judging the scarecrows, each room having two “Minute to Win It” activities going and ending with a pumpkin pie eating contest. Then on the 31st we will be celebrating Halloween.

I am new to the Homework room this year. A big goal for me and the Club is to partner with the schools and teachers to help our youth be successful in getting their work done in a quiet and helpful environment, and to also be able to go home without having to worry about homework and just have some kid time. I am setting up some incentives for the kids’ participation and hard work. The next big goal we are working on is setting up a reading goal for those kids that love to read.

I am also doing some important teaching on bullying to guide our kids on what to do when in this situation or seeing this happen to one of our friends. For the first month I have seen several youth come in with great attitudes wanting to get their work done; we also have some great older youth that take time out to help some of the younger kids. When the kids need a break from their homework, you will probably find us doing some crazy dancing to music. Have a great week.

Hello from Social Rec. We are having a great time learning new games. We’ve got a contest going on with the Simon game for the month of October.

For the month of September we had a contest to see who could guess the number of Dum Dums in the jar and Justin Maier was the lucky winner.
