Clyda “Babe” Ayers

Clyda “Babe” (Knerr) Ayers was born in Lewistown, on July 14, 1937, the daughter of Vern and Beatrice (Burnham) Knerr. She grew up in the Maiden and New Year Canyon area attending school at Maiden, Brooks, Folda, Lewistown Jr. High and Fergus County High School.

Babe married Vincent Tuss Jr. in August of 1954. Later, she married Donald Tousley. In 1966, she married Clarence Ayers. They traveled working road construction; settling in Jefferson City. She worked at the Clover Leaf Dairy in Helena. Babe became a 4-H Leader for eight years before moving to Bridger to ranch with the Ayers family.

In the spring of 1983, she moved back to Lewistown and worked in various businesses. Babe moved to Roy in 1994 and took up running the Legion Bar a few years later, for five to six years.

Babe loved her grandchildren; her family came first, as did her friends and neighbors. She enjoyed gardening, sewing, quilting, wood crafts and cooking. She cooked on the railroad, in restaurants and later years at the Hobson Senior Center. Babe made quilts for several grandchildren and was an active Women of the Moose member, having received a State Award in 1991.
