Cowboy Poetry hosts ‘Old Glory’ retirement ceremony

Boy Scout Troop 360 of Lewistown will conduct an official American Flag Retirement Ceremony (by burning) at Jack’s Hangar at the Lewistown Airport at 9:30 p.m. on Thursday, Aug. 17. The “Old Glory” Retirement Ceremony will immediately follow the 32nd Montana Cowboy Poetry Gathering’s kick-off dinner and mini show at Jack’s Hangar. Everyone is invited to attend the American flag retirement ceremony for unserviceable American flags.

Boy Scout Troop 360, comprised of young males aged 11 to 18, includes scouts from Lewis and Clark Elementary, Lewistown Junior High and Fergus High School. They successfully conducted this moving ceremony numerous times in the past. A highlight of the ceremony will be “Taps,” played by scout, Kendall Barta.

Troop 360 is based at First Presbyterian Church in Lewistown and led by Scoutmaster Jeff Russell, a sixth-grade teacher at Lewis and Clark Elementary School.

Directional signs to Jack’s Hangar will guide everyone out to the site, where we’ll gather under the stars of the Big Sky to honor “Old Glory” and all that she represents.
