Dorothy Genevieve (Dirkes) Horan

Dorothy Genevieve (Dirkes) Horan, born Aug. 2, 1928, died at Central Montana Hospital on Jan. 10, 2017.

She is survived by her two sons, Ed and Kelly Horan, daughter Jo (Horan) Watters, six grandchildren ( Abby, Heidi, Skylur, Crystal, Rusty, Nicholas) and  six great-grandchildren (Karla, Tina, Hunter, Ledford, Hendrix and Letcher).

Dorothy was preceded in death by her siblings, Marcella, Eleanor, Alice, baby Dorothy, Francis, Arnold,  Jerry, and her husband of 67 years,  Joseph Thomas (Tom) Horan, who she married in 1948.

She and Tom lived in Billings before moving out to his family farm in Eden Route, Mont., where they farmed until 1972. Then they moved to Erskine, Minn., where they also farmed for about eight years before retiring to Lewistown.

Dorothy left on a journey by herself and went ahead to pick a cozy house on a hill with beautiful Spring Creek right out front, surrounded by tall pine trees all around.

She will be missed by all that knew her beautiful smile, humor and wit coupled with hundreds of catchy songs she played by ear on the piano, accordion or guitar. Never one to slow down and be idle, she was always working on something, and she was always there to help whomever needed to be helped along the way.

Cremation has already taken place, and a service will be planned for later in the year. To reach the family, email  Ed Horan at Donations in Dorothy’s honor can be sent to

If flowers grow in heaven, Lord,

then pick a bunch for me.

Then place them in my mother’s arms

and tell her they’re from me.

Tell her that I love and miss her,

and when she turns to smile,

Place a kiss upon her cheek and hold her for awhile.
