Eugene ‘Gene’ Raymond Wichman

Eugene “Gene” Raymond Wichman, 84, of Hilger passed away on May 8, 2018 surrounded by his family.

Gene was born Oct. 12, 1933 in Lewistown, Montana to Walter and Jennie (Barta) Wichman. He attended the Wild Rose Grade School and graduated from Moore High School in 1952. Gene served in the Army from January 1954 to November 1956, where he spent most of his service time as a mechanic stationed in England.

Gene was united in marriage to Evelyn Hassler on Nov. 16, 1957 in Hilger, Montana. They moved to Hilger in 1963 from Kolin, where he farmed and ranched. In 1992 he retired; as much as a farmer/ rancher can. He was always one to build and innovate; at age 15 he built his own car. Later he built a garden tractor, with which his kids and grandkids spent many hours cultivating the potato patch, as well as driving it up and down the road. Grandson Walter revived the tractor and is still driving it today. In the 1970s he was looking for a better way to put up hay and brought the first round baler to Fergus County. He also grew canola when many did not know what it was.

When Gene was 5, he spent a month in the hospital after surgery to remove his appendix. He fell out of bed, got an infection, and when they sent for penicillin it was sent to Lewiston, Idaho by mistake. Later in life Gene faced more adversity, losing an eye and having kidney surgery in the same year. His final year was spent in a hard fight against cancer.

Gene enjoyed his grandkids, and greatgrand kids; he traveled many miles to watch ball games. He loved to play pool with anyone who was willing; really enjoying several leagues, especially the senior pool league in Lewistown.

He was involved in the NFO, VFW, NRA, Eagles, Moose and was on the Hilger School Board and helped establish the Hilger Fire Department.

In addition to his wife, Evelyn, Gene is survived by a daughter, Carlene (Kelly) Diemert of Lothair, Montana, and two sons, Greg (Tami) of Hilger and Gordon (Mary) of Winifred; grandchildren: Kacey, Chase, Charlie, (Carlene’s) Jeremiah, Walter, Randi, (Greg’s), Jackie, Kayleigh, Doug, Zach, Dan, Kenny, Daris, Lataya, Brett, Kasper, Natasha, Jayda, DJ, Shantyl, Zander, Hayleigh, (Gordon’s); Great-Grandchildren: Xander, Johnathan, Aiden, Breylin, Brun, Soren, Bryar, Kieran, Fletcher. Avery, Ellie, Rylee, and Bryson; two brothers, Ed (Janelle) and Dennis; one sister, Roberta (Frank) Gremaux; and many nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his parents; brother, Robert; and sister, Sis (Lorraine) Berg.
