Jeanne L. Mattson, 94, of Billings, went home to be with our Lord and Savior on Jan. 11, 2022.

Jeanne was born on April 12, 1927, in Midway, North Dakota, to Mabel (Gustafson) and Elmer M. Mack.

She attended a country school in Sand Creek, North Dakota, through eighth grade and graduated in 1945 from Bowman High School in North Dakota. She was employed in Slope County as the Deputy Clerk of Court. Jeanne married Ronald Mattson in Baker on Dec. 8, 1945, and later worked as a stenographer at the Dickinson Veteran’s Association.

Jeanne and Ronald moved to Montana in 1951 and had a family of four children: Carla, Ronna, Holly, and David. They lived in Missoula, Oilmont, Manhattan, Shelby, and Bozeman. In 1972, they settled in Lewistown, where they lived for over 40 years.

While in Manhattan, Jeanne often flew as a passenger with Ronald. During one particularly rocky flight, she decided to learn how to fly so she could “get that thing down!” Consequently, Jeanne took flying lessons and earned her private pilot’s license in 1967. She furthered her education at MSU-Bozeman and earned additional credits from the College of Great Falls and MSU-Billings.

Living in Bozeman, she worked at the MSU Library, while Ronald continued his education.

Jeanne and Ronald were active members of Zion Lutheran Church in Lewistown, where Jeanne served on the church council and as secretary. She also belonged to a bridge club in Lewistown and enjoyed playing bridge with her friends for many years.

She loved China painting. She made porcelain dolls for each of her children and grandchildren, plus many China painted items for friends and family.

After Ronald’s death in 2014, Jeanne moved to Saint John’s Senior Living in Billings where she enjoyed life with other residents from Lewistown and many new acquaintances.

Her main objective in life was to raise her four children with love, faith in God, and compassion for others.

Jeanne is survived by her four children: Carla Ranney of Belgrade, Ronna Greenup of Las Vegas, Nev., Holly Carter Elkin of Billings, and David (Suzanne) Mattson of Kalispell; nine grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, parents, two brothers, a foster brother, and a grandson.

Donations may be made to the American Macular Degeneration Foundation (AMDF) or to Zion Lutheran Church in Lewistown.

Viewing will be held Friday, Jan. 21 from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. at Creel Funeral Home, and from 2 p.m. to 3 p.m. at Zion Lutheran Church. Funeral Services will be at Zion Lutheran Church, Friday, Jan. 21 at 3 p.m. with interment to follow at Lewistown City Cemetery.
