Letter to the Editor - Why can’t we focus on the issues?

Dear Editor,

Recently several candidates running for City Commissioner in Lewistown have been termed “elitists.” Given at least one is a former school-teacher, I must question the motivation for making such an incendiary accusation. Spreading “elitist” falsehoods couldn’t be further from the truth. That’s because most, if not all of us, have been there, done that. And just because some have benefitted along the way, doesn’t mean they’ve forgotten from whence they came.

However and wherever I may live now, don’t assume that I have never been hungry or lacked cash in my pocket. Nor that I haven’t lost a home or car or everything at some time. Having personally been the victim of prejudice, hate and derision I know firsthand what cruelty is like. And just because I’ve gotten to a better place via years of blood, sweat and tears doesn’t make me any less of man than you.

The majority of those who serve in local government will tell you it’s a thankless job. There is little personal gain in helping others. Yet fortunately some find working for the common good beyond fulfilling.

Therefore while I may not like, agree with nor support all of our candidates for City Commissioner, I am deeply grateful for their willingness to give back. Not all will get my vote, but all have my respect. That is unless they purposefully hurt others in the process.

Why can’t we focus on the issues themselves? We all come from different places. Thus none of us has the right to slur others for having an alternative perspective. Each of us benefits from diverse opinions. And fortunately our form of government insures that ultimately we all have a voice. All that’s required is that each of us vote. And subsequently participate in our City Government’s open forum.

Anger, negativity and derision have no place within said context. Whereas discussion, interaction, and honesty do. If believing that such a “mix” is best for all – then I’m proud to be what some apparently consider an elitist.
