Lewistown wins on busy sports weekend

If you are a sports fan, Lewistown was the place to be last weekend.

The fields and courts at Symmes Park and across town at Fergus High School were filled with athletes from 17 different Montana communities.

Symmes Park was bustling with activity, including Redbirds baseball on one side of the park, Lewistown U19 soccer games in the middle, and high school tennis at the other end.

At the high school, players from five Class A schools were squaring off for the two-day Fergus Invitational tennis meet. Right next door, the track and field complex was hosting 275 junior high athletes from 10 schools around the state.

The sports facilities in Lewistown weren’t the only busy areas on Saturday. Downtown was buzzing with activity. Restaurants, hotels, gas stations and retailers all enjoyed the influx of athletes from out of town.

It was a good weekend for sports fans and for the local economy.

Lewistown is home to some of the finest outdoor sports venues in the state. In addition to Symmes Park and Fergus High School mentioned above, there is also d’Autremont Complex at the airport and Frank Day Park, which includes the swimming pool, skating rink and baseball field. On top of that, there are playing fields and ball diamonds at other city parks and schools around town.

Area residents make these venues possible with their tax money, but some of these facilities would not exist without generous donations from private individuals, businesses and community organizations.

Maintaining these sports venues is a huge task for the city parks department and our local schools. Fortunately, there are parents and fans who step up each year to donate countless hours to keep our fields and courts in top condition. Together with the city and schools, it is those volunteers and the many private donors who make weekends like the last one possible.

So regardless of what the scoreboards around town read on Saturday afternoon, Lewistown was the real winner.
