Livestock continues to move off summer pastures

This last week was mostly warm and sunny before turning cool and rainy over the weekend for much of Montana, according to the Mountain Regional Field Office of the National Agricultural Statistics Service, USDA. Daytime high temperatures for the week ranged from the mid 70s to 92 degrees in Loma. Overnight lows ranged from the mid 20s to the upper 40s with a statewide low of 24 degrees in Olney. Dillon received the highest amount of precipitation for the week with 0.58 of an inch of moisture and most other reporting stations reported receiving moisture from the system that ranged from 0.01 to 0.50 of an inch of moisture.

Producers harvesting corn for grain and silage continued progressing ahead of normal progress with 28 percent of corn for grain and 83 percent of corn silage harvested compared with five-year averages of 11 percent and 75 percent, respectively.

Winter wheat seeding continues with 70 percent complete, which is behind last year and right at the five-year average and is 33 percent emerged, ahead of both last year and the five-year average. Oilseed harvest is well underway but behind last year and the five-year average for all except safflower, which is 53 percent complete. Other hay harvest is wrapping up a plentiful haying year according to reporters with 95 percent complete.

Potato harvest continues behind last year and the five-year average, with 32 percent harvested, compared with 53 percent last year and the five-year average of 40 percent harvested. Sugarbeet harvest, however, remains ahead of last year and the five-year average with 22 percent complete so far.

Pasture and rangeland conditions remained steady, with 29 percent rated good to excellent which was better than last year’s 20 percent but below the five-year average of 33 percent. Livestock producers continue to move stock off summer pastures with 38 percent of cattle and calves moved and 57 percent of sheep and lambs moved.
