Man shot, killed after stabbing Phillips County Sheriff’s deputy

Wedmesday morning Phillips County Sheriff’s Deputy Alan Guderjahn responded to a call about a suspicious male walking along US 191 near mile marker 122. When confronted, the suspect attacked and stabbed the deputy multiple times. The deputy discharged his firearm, killing the suspect. The deputy is currently in Great Falls for treatment and observation.

The Phillips County Sheriff has asked the Montana Department of Justice’s Division of Criminal Investigation to investigate the incident. The Montana Highway Patrol is also assisting with incident scene management.

Phillips County Sheriff’s Deputy Alan Guderjahn is doing well and is still being held for medical observation in Great Falls. It’s anticipated that he will be released later today or tomorrow.

The deceased suspect has been identified as Emil Ambrose Mecklenburg, age 20, from Malta. His autopsy is scheduled for today in Billings.

Yesterday, the Division of Criminal Investigation cleared the highway scene but is still conducting interviews, executing search warrants and processing evidence. Once the investigation is complete, the case file will be given to the Phillips County Attorney’s Office and a coroner’s inquest will be scheduled.
