Winter is right around the corner and that means youth hockey leagues are starting soon.
Kids of all ages are invited to attend a hockey sign-up meeting at 6 p.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 30 at the Lewistown Civic Center.
The league is open to boys and girls and all skill levels and new players are welcome.
Youth hockey is growing in popularity across Montana but it is a new sport in Lewistown. Organizers are making a big push this year to get new skaters involved.
Practices will be held at the Lewistown Ice Rink at Frank Day Park near the swimming pool. The rink will be refrigerated, which should provide reliable ice throughout the winter.
Tuesdays and Thursdays will be the big skating days this winter.
From 3:30 to 5 p.m. there will be an open skate, with an emphasis on learning to skate. Chris Merker will coordinate the open skate and all ages are welcome. From 5:15 to 6:15 p.m. youth hockey players under 10 years old will take the ice. Kids ages 11 and up will skate from 6:45 to 7:45 p.m. on Tuesdays and Thursdays.
Scott Kirsch and Jay Hanson will coach the older kids this year and the 10 and under  skaters will be coached by Jacques Rutten, Matt DeRosier and Bruce Marsden.
Practices will focus on learning hockey fundamentals. In the 10U league, there will be a strong emphasis on learning to skate and basic hockey skills. Tuesday nights will be practice night, and Thursdays will be half-ice scrimmages.
The older kids will also focus on skating, as well as passing, shooting and hockey rules and strategy. There will also be plenty of time for scrimmaging and games.
Equipment is required to play and there will be a participation fee this year, which will include a jersey. Scott Kirsch has equipment available at Krings Greenhouse and he can direct players where they can purchase gear.
Sign-up will be held at 6 p.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 30 Skating will begin Dec. 8 and continue through February. If you can’t attend the sign-up night but want to play, contact Scott Kirsch at 366-0755 or Jacques Rutten at 366-1364.
