Paying tribute to fallen heroes

Managing Editor

Memorial Day 2017 will be celebrated on Monday, May 29. The federal holiday marks a day of remembrance for men and women who died while serving their country in the armed forces. The holiday is celebrated on the last Monday in May, and originated after the Civil War as Decoration Day. At that point there were two days celebrated, one for the Union fallen, and one for the Confederate. Eventually the two were merged into one day, Memorial Day. Traditional practices include flag ceremonies, parades and the placing of flowers and flags on the graves of fallen service men and women.
