The Central Montana Shooting Complex is hosting its third-annual Field Practical Rifle Match next Saturday, and Complex Director Fred Picco is excited to see the competition return.

“It’s a popular sport, and we’re trying to get as many locals involved as we can,” he said.

Picco described the match as a test of skill under pressure.

“It’s designed to simulate real-world hunting and shooting conditions,” he said. “We’ll have targets from 100 to over 1000 yards, and the competitors will be shooting all-steel targets at various distances and from varying positions.”

With eight stages, and a roster that will hold up to 80 competitors, Picco expects the event to last most of the day. However, that doesn’t mean the shooters will get an unlimited amount of time to take aim.

“Each event is timed 3 minutes from the beginning to the end,” he said. “It induces a little bit of stress, like a hunting situation where you have to get your shots off, and accuracy is what it’s all about.”

The match will be split into two divisions, adult and youth, and each group will have prizes sponsored by Leupold Optics and Don’s Store for top shots.

Picco has already seen interest in the competition: Over 40 people have registered, including shooters from Wyoming. He expects the event will be fun, for competitors and audience members alike.

“It’s a fun time, and we encourage the public to come out and view it, but hearing and eye protection is required on the range for everyone,” he said. “It’s fun because there’s instant feedback: Someone shoots and you can hear it and see the target move.”

Picco even mentioned competitors have an extra chance to win.

“There is a meet-and-greet burger dinner for the competitors Friday evening, and we’ll be giving away a rifle scope” he said.
