The Lewistown American Legion baseball team brought their strong bats to their opening game of the Northern A District Tournament in Great Falls on Thursday. The Redbirds exploded for 14 runs on 13 hits in the contest against Havre. Meanwhile, Redbird starting pitcher, Tyler Lee, had a strong game against the Northstars by only giving up two runs on five hits in six innings of work. Ben Kolar pitched the top of the seventh inning for the Birds.
With the 14-2 win over Havre, Lewistown advanced to a quarterfinal matchup against Medicine Hat Friday evening. A win over the Knights would advance Lewistown into a semi-final matchup against either Fort Macloud or Vauxhall on Saturday. Fort Macloud upset the Lethbridge Miners in the first game of the tournament, while Vauxhall had to score two runs in the bottom of the ninth inning to defeat a determined Tri-County team, 12-11.
In the win over Havre, the Redbirds bats went to work early scoring five runs in the bottom of the first inning. A Jace Davis triple in the first inning brought home three runs. Hunter Schell and Cordell Gallagher also had RBIs in the first.
The Redbirds scored in every inning of the seven-inning game except the bottom of the second inning. Lewistown added two runs in the bottom of both the third and fourth innings and then added four more runs in the bottom of the fifth. The Birds added a single run in the bottom of the sixth. The game was called after the Northstars batted in the top of the seventh inning, due to the 10-run mercy rule. All games at the district level are normally nine innings in length.
Andrew Lalum ended up with a total of five RBIs for the Birds. Lalum also scored twice and had two hits, including a double. He was also hit by a pitch. Lee helped his own cause offensively by banging out four hits, scoring three times and knocking in one run. Davis and Eric Knox also had two hits each, while Davis had three RBIs. A total of five Redbird batters were hit by pitches by the Havre pitchers. Besides Lalum, Cody Henderson, Davis, Hunter Schell and Jake Clinton were also hit batsmen.
