Richard Edward Delaney, 77, of Grass Range, passed away Dec. 7, 2018 of complications from a major heart attack on Nov. 6. He was the second son of George “Edward” and Gladys (Greeno) Delaney born August 31, 1941 in Dickinson, North Dakota.

Richard’s time on the family ranch north of Teigen, provided the foundation to explore and build before his graduation in 1960 from Winnett High School. Following Richard’s active years of service in the National Guard he returned to Grass Range where he met and married, in 1965, Karen Nelson. Together they were quick to have friends andfamily in for a warm meal and bunk at the ranch, then creating, Delaney Construction.

As a construction superintendent Richard worked numerous military base projects and paving improvements from Spokane to Bremerton, Washington over the next 30 years. Eventually a full-time home was settled for them in Belfair, Washington until Richard’s need to travel again convinced Karen winter in Arizona and summer in Montana would define retired.

Richard had a passion for adventure into new places, new projects and new friendships. His ambition took him and Karen, his family and many friends on vacations across America, camping trips from creeks to ocean side, and created friendships with strangers and neighbors along the way. Richard showed true pride in following his sons during their school days and then his grandchildren. He could always find someone on the side lines, or in the bleachers he knew and took the time to visit with. He would plan months in advance of Winnett All-School Reunions, making certain to check in with old friends.

Richard is survived by his wife Karen and his sons Troy and Gina Delaney with their children Trenton and Kaylyn; Brian and Marcia Delaney with their children Amanda, Cody, Cassandra, Cole and Dylan; and two greatgrandchildren Jacob and Rhyann Delaney. He was always taking time for extended family Gary and Aloya Nelson, George and Peggy Nelson, Bonnie and Doug Soule, Greg Nelson, Ronald Nelson and Rory Nelson; and multiple nieces and nephews. Richard held a special relationship with his brother’s children Tom, David, Scott and Tara. Richard’s parents and his brother Raymond precede him.

A private family burial is planned at a later date. Richard’s fondness for community maintenance can be shared by donations to the Grass Range Endowment fund, c/o Central Montana Foundation, PO Box 334, Lewistown, MT 59457.
