Each year South Central Montana RSVP celebrates the hard work and dedication of volunteers aged 55 and older. May 15-19 is Senior Corp Week. Volunteers across the nation are recognized for their talent, passion and time that they contribute to the community. Lewistown RSVP volunteers logged in a stunning 11,990-plus volunteer hours for the fiscal year of 2016. There are 4,500 Senior Corp Volunteers enrolled in Montana and Lewistown RSVP is proud to celebrate 161 volunteers.

One of the benefits RSVP offers volunteers is accidental and personal liability insurance at no cost. This service is provided to ensure support and is effective from the date of enrollment.

Summer is upon us. There are multiple volunteer opportunities in Fergus County and Judith Basin County. If you or someone you know would like to enroll with RSVP and join any one of our organizations please contact Jennifer Moody at the Lewistown office, 535-0077.

Volunteer opportunities

The Central Montana Museum is now open for the summer. Hours of operation are 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., seven days a week from Memorial Day to Labor Day. The museum is entirely operated through our volunteers. RSVP is currently looking for one to two additional volunteers.

• The Friends of the Library is in need of volunteers to help shelf and organize books on Thursday mornings at The Book Station, located across from the Lewistown Public Library on Main Street.

• The Art Center also seeks volunteers, as well as The Lewistown Public Library and Community Cupboard. Contact the local RSVP office for details.

• The Council on Aging is in need of additional hosts, dining room help and dishwashers for their daily grubstakes meal. We are also looking for help in the office during the lunch hour. This is a crucial service provided in Central Montana, and a meaningful volunteer opportunity.

• The Red Cross is recruiting a Fergus County Disaster Action Team to respond to local emergencies such as house fires, wildfires, and floods. Volunteers would serve on an on-call basis to support local agencies and authorities in the relief effort. Services provided may include arranging for emergency food, housing, clothing, and transportation, as well as referrals to other resources. Training and support is provided by The Red Cross of Montana.

• ROWL (Recycle Our Waste Lewistown) is seeking volunteers to help sort and bale plastics. Even an hour or two a week would make a big difference.

• The Treasure Depot is recruiting volunteers for Saturdays to work assisting customers and finishing their order. This opportunity might appeal to someone interested in a weekend volunteer experience. The Treasure Depot supports the work of the Council on Aging.

• Valle Vista Healthcare Community is in need of volunteers interested in enriching the lives of nursing home residents through crafts, playing cards, performing music, or whatever talents you may have to share. Just one hour per week to talk, read, and listen to a resident who doesn’t receive many visitors is priceless time spent for the both the volunteer and resident. There are many opportunities available. Please contact RSVP for more information.

• The Veterans of Foreign Wars Auxiliary is open to female veterans and their spouses. They always welcome new members to assist in various projects and recognitions that benefit veterans throughout the year.

• The Office of Veteran’s Affairs and the Central Montana Fairgrounds are both in need of volunteers to provide clerical support on an as-needed basis.

For more information or to turn in your hours, please contact Jennifer Moody, Volunteer Coordinator, at 535-0077, or stop by our office at 404 W. Broadway, Wells Fargo Bank Building (upstairs), Lewistown.
