Participation may have gone down slightly, but organizers of the Montana Island Challenge thought this year was a model event.

Scott Kirsch, Lewistown Ice Skating Association treasurer, reported a trouble-free experience for outdoor enthusiasts.

“It went really smoothly,” he said.

The association, along with the Boys and Girls Club of Lewistown and the Central Montana Jaycees, organized the event. Kirsch credited a large part of the event’s success to everyone working the challenge.

“There was a lot of good volunteer help, and it kind of made it easy on us [organizers],” he said, adding even the donated venue was a perfect fit.

Kirsch saw fewer runners and hikers at this year’s Montana Island Challenge, but was happy to tally an increase in cyclist registration. He was also excited that improvements to the event and its setting brought positive results.

“We improved the registration and the event timing,” he said. “We also improved the route for the 8K run and the biking event by using a road instead of the drainage trail.”

Montana Island Challenge Committee Chair Carly Wheatley added that even the weather participated. She said the great cyclist turnout meant many riders shared a clear view of Friday night’s stars, while runners and hikers had a cool but rain-free day.

Both organizers are eager for next year, and Kirsch reported the group hopes to increase marketing for the 2017 half marathon and cycling events.
