The following report is taken from information provided by the Fergus County Sheriff’s Department and does not represent the total scope of the sheriff’s department’s activity. All persons are innocent until proven guilty.

July 29

• At 8:50 a.m. a caller reported the suspicious activities of some young fairgoers. The day before, the caller got into a heated discussion about buffalo preservation with a group of New York kids. The conversation ended when the group, all wearing backpacks, had walked off. The man saw the group again around 8:30 p.m., but none of them had their packs. The caller thought the kids were suspicious because he didn’t know where the bags could have gone.

July 30

• At 3:34 p.m. Central Montana Dispatch reported a call about a sex offender possibly violating his registration conditions. A caller said the offender was with a small child at the fair’s water place for kids. After some research, law enforcement determined the offender had a wife and child of his own, and that being with a child in public did not violate his conditions.

• At 9:45 p.m. a man called in about trespassers camping on his land. He stated he had asked the people to put their fire out and leave, and the group had responded by claiming the land belonged to BLM. The caller now wanted to check on the situation, unless the department sent someone. After learning a deputy would be sent only on request, he volunteered to drive to their campsite in a couple of hours.

The man called back at 11:02 a.m. the next day to report he had spoken with a ranger about the campers. He also said the group had been shooting guns, and two of his lawn chairs were missing. The campers had moved, however, and were now on BLM land.
