Susan Mary Rutherford

Susan Mary Rutherford of Lewistown died of natural causes Tuesday, Feb. 21, 2017, at St. Vincent’s Hospital in Billings, surrounded by her family and loved ones. She was 71. 

Born Feb. 9, 1946 in Lewistown, a daughter of William and Mary Evans Rutherford, she received her early education in Ware, Mont.; then moved to Lewistown and attended St. Leo’s Catholic School, graduating in 1964. Following her graduation, she moved to Edmondton, Canada to join the Daughters of Jesus Catholic Convent. After leaving the Convent she moved to Helena to attend business school. 

In November of 1968, she was united in marriage to Gary Ernest Glenn at St. Leo’s Catholic Church; they later divorced. 

In 1971, Susan moved to Lewistown and began working at Buttrey’s Food Store where her contagious smile and kindness touched the hearts of many people in Fergus County. Susan was a member of the St. Leo’s Catholic Church, and spent many hours volunteering and enjoying the many gatherings with her friends in the parish. 

In 1986, she began working for the Welfare Department pursuing a career as a case manager, dedicating her life to public service. Susan moved to Missoula in 1990, where she loved the fog and activities with her beloved friends who she cherished with all her heart. 

She moved to Helena in 2004, and retired in 2006, relocating back to her hometown to be close to her family. In her retirement years, she helped care for and raise her great-grandchildren. Susan loved to read books, tell stories, play pinochle, bingo, visit with Lewistown friends, and looked forward to the Evans Family Reunions where she could reminisce with her family. Susan was a member of the Toastmasters Club, loved to work the Cursillom and served on the board of directors at the Central Montana Head Start. 

She is survived by her two daughters, Corby Aamold of Lewistown and Angie (Kyle) DeMars of Bozeman, who she devoted her entire life to; her grandchildren Celia Aamold (Nathan Lotan); Christopher Aamold (Sarah McReynolds); Alexis Aamold; Mikkel DeMars, Brooklyn DeMars and Morgan DeMars; great-grandchildren Carson and Charlotte (Charleigh) Lotan; her siblings Ann (Bill) Phillips, Joey Retz, Carol (Tom) Spika, Kathy (Ken) Whitaker, Bill (Nadine) Rutherford, Helen (Bill) Crabtree, Jim (Cindy) Rutherford, and Veronica (Scott) Sweeney; good friend and aunt JoAnn Evans, and numerous cousins, nieces and nephews. 

She was proceeded in death by her parents William and Mary Rutherford; brother-in-law Robert Retz; two nieces Darcee Wichman and Elizabeth Rutherford; her beloved aunts and uncles Veronica Evans, Mike and Marie Evans, Emil Evans, George and Gert Evans and Nick and Katie Evans. 

A celebration of Susan’s life will be held from noon to 2 p.m., Sunday Feb. 26, at Pine Meadows Golf Course. Please join us for a casual gathering in her honor.
