Today (Saturday) the Fergus High School varsity tennis teams, under the tutelage of long-time Head Coach Diane Lewis, play host to Park, Havre and Billings Central. The FHS junior varsity squads head to Havre to play in a JV tournament today.
Danyon Rice, who competed at the state tournament in Bozeman last year, leads the FHS boys’ team. Rice is the No. 1 singles player for the Golden Eagles. Other varsity singles players are Jace Philipps, Tanner Mannin and Weston Church. Doubles teams for the Fergus boys include Jacob Miller and Ben Kolar, Dylan Gatz and Thad Nave, and Greg Fulbright and Cooper Bruchez.
On the girls’ team, number one singles player Taylor Woods returns after competing at the state tournament a year ago. Also playing singles for the Golden Eagles are Lissy Southworth, Tessa Gatz and Annie Franz. Girls’ doubles teams are Abby Gatz and Lexi Arndt, Audra Fry and Summer Elmore, and Sydney Kelsey and Nicole Woolett.
Matches begin today at 9 a.m.
Fergus will host two other tournaments during the season. On Friday and Saturday, May 12-13, the Golden Eagles host their annual FHS Invitational. The following weekend, Thursday and Friday, May 18 and 19, Fergus will host the Central A Divisional Tournament. The top four singles players from both boys and girls, along with the top four doubles teams, advance from the Central A Divisional Tournament to the State A Tournament, which will be played in Kalispell this year.
