Winnett-Grass Range, Tri-City girls open with wins at Northern C

Both the Winnett-Grass Range and Tri-City girls’ teams won first-round games against their opponents in the Northern C Divisional Tournament in Great Falls on Wednesday. The two wins moved the two teams into in the Northern C Divisional championship game on Saturday night.

Winnett-Grass Range defeated Simms, 45-28. In a big upset, the Lady Titans defeated Fort Benton, 62-43, the District 9C winner.

The Lady Rams took an 11-6 first quarter lead over Simms behind 6 points from Brynn Jolma. At halftime, W-GR led, 15-14, as the Lady Rams were held to only 4 points in the second period by the Lady Tiger defense.

Sydney Browning scored 8 points, including two 3-pointers, in the third period to help give the Lady Rams a 27-20 lead heading into the final quarter.

Tia Stahl hit three 3-pointers to help the Lady Rams score 18 points in the final eight minutes to take the 45-28 win. Taylor Stahl added 6 points in the final quarter.

Only four Lady Rams scored in the game. They were led by Jolma and Taylor Stahl with 13 points each, while Browning added 10 and Tia Stahl 9. Jolma, Taylor Stahl and Piper Johnson had two assists each for the Lady Rams. Jolma added 10 rebounds.

Tri-City downs Lady Longhorns

In a game that saw seven lead changes and six ties, Tri-City (Moore, Hobson, Judith Gap) used a strong third quarter to score the 62-43 win. Fort Benton held a 13-10 lead at the end of the first quarter and led 26-24 at halftime.

In the third quarter the Lady Titan offense exploded for 28 points, while holding the Lady Longhorns to only 9 points to take a 52-35 advantage into the fourth quarter. Brianna Bergum had 8 points in the third period for the Lady Titans, while Sami Connerton added 5 points.

Tri-City was only able to add 10 more points to its total in the final eight minutes, but the Lady Titan defense held Fort Benton to only 8 points to take the 62-43 win.

Bergum led the Lady Titan attack with 19 points. Kristen Vincent added 13 points in the win, while Connerton and Chloe Derks each had 8 points. The assists leader for the Lady Titans was Derks with three. Bergum finished with a double-double by collecting 11 rebounds to go with her 19 points.
