Sheriff's Log

The following report is taken from information provided by the Fergus County Sheriff’s Department and does not represent the total scope of the sheriff’s department’s activity. All persons are innocent until proven guilty.

Jan. 5
• At 9:44 a.m. a confidential informant reported a suspected incident of drug and alcohol use by underage youth.
• At 6:48 p.m. a detention officer received a call from someone claiming to be an officer with the Eureka Police Department. The caller said someone had been in a bad car wreck and wouldn’t make it through the night. He requested someone at the department call this person, giving the name of whom he wanted to call, as well as a number to a phone he claimed to have recovered from the scene of the accident.

After the call, the Fergus County detention officer called the Eureka Police Department to verify the caller’s claims. The chief of police was not available, but an on-duty officer said no one by the caller’s name worked there, and the accident victim had not been in an accident as far as the EPD knew.

At 6:56 p.m. the same man made another call to the Fergus County Sheriff’s Department, this time reaching dispatch. The dispatcher asked which hospital the accident victim was in, and the caller couldn’t answer. After replaying both calls, the dispatcher and the detention officer confirmed their suspicions about who was calling and impersonating an officer.

The caller described three individuals in the SUV, and thought all of them had glazed eyes and strange behavior.
