Winnett High School junior and senior math students participated in the 2017 National Society of Professional Surveyors Trig-Star Contest on May 2. The NSPS sponsors the nationwide test to demonstrate the real-life application of trigonometry in the actual field of surveying, and to encourage students to pursue math-based careers.

MARLS awarded the Winnett local champion Colby Atchison $100 for top score. Along with being the local winner, Colby placed second in the Northeast Chapter competition.

Brian Huatori, the MARLS Northeast Chapter president, traveled from Glendive to Winnett to present Colby with an additional $100 from their chapter at Winnett’s award banquet.

The Montana Association of Registered Land Surveyors has eight local chapters. Each sponsors and administers the nationwide test to their local chapter participating high school students. This spring, 12 Winnett students took the exam.
