Athlete of the Week

Tyler Lee

Most Lewistown Redbirds baseball players end their careers on the diamond in the summer following high school graduation. Others have gone on to play college baseball, but it is very rare for a Redbird to return to the Lewistown American Legion team to play another year after completing a year of college, but that is what Tyler Lee decided to do this summer. Tyler was not too old to play another season for the Birds and came back to help the team in an attempt to get to the Class A state tournament, which will be played in Three Forks this season.
Tyler, an all-conference and all-state player for Coach Scott Sparks, is a strong leader again this season. Although he has struggled at the plate some this year, Tyler contributed a strong bat when the Birds made their first trip into Canada this last weekend. In 16 at bats, Tyler had eight hits to bat a solid .500 for the weekend. In addition, Tyler added six RBIs and scored one run. Of his eight hits, two were doubles.
Although Tyler is usually seen either behind the plate or on the mound for the Redbirds, he is able to play any infield position.
In the final game in Canada, Tyler had his best plate appearance and also picked up a win on the mound for the birds. Against Vauxhall, Tyler contributed three hits in five plate appearances. On the mound, Tyler went the distance of seven innings to pick up the 9-3 win. Although he did give up three runs, only one was earned. Tyler struck out three Spur batters and walked only one.
For the season, Tyler has a .373 batting average, with 53 hits in 142 at bats. His on-base percentage is .488. Tyler has nine doubles during the season and 35 RBIs. He was walked 15 times, and only struck out five times.
On the mound, Tyler has a 6-3 win-loss record, along with one save. His ERA is 3.02. Tyler has struck out 38 batters, while only walking 22.
