Mary Elizabeth Johnson

Saturday, June 2, 2018

On May 25, 2018, our wife and mother passed away peacefully at St. Peter’s Hospital after a very long courageous battle with pancreatic cancer.

Mary was born on Feb. 16, 1937 in Springfield, Missouri to Walter and Jennie Conell who later divorced, leaving the children with relatives until moving with her mother west and settling in Butte, Montana where Mary worked and attended school.

In 1956, Mary was operating a café in Ashland, Montana where she met her future husband Bud Johnson who was working for the Montana Highway Survey crew. Mary and Bud were married on April 14, 1957. Mary and Bud’s family consists of their five children; John (Karen) Johnson, Kem (Janet) Johnson, Deb Lind, Sherry (Jerry) East and Casey (Brenda) Johnson, nine grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren.

Mary was a very talented seamstress who made dresses for her daughters and granddaughters for school and church. She crocheted many afghans, giving them to family and to every newborn great-grandchild. She made many hand-sewn quilts. Mary loved gardening and raising many types of flowers.

The family wishes to thank Dr. Wiener and the nurses and other staff from St. Peter’s Hospital and Hospice in addition to the staff at the Legacy Home where she and Bud lived.

Mary was preceded in death by her parents and one halfsister, Linda.

She has two brothers, Walt (Tana) Conell and Charlie Conell; a half-brother, Walter Ray and a half-sister, Carol still surviving. She also has many nieces and nephews and great- nieces and nephews whom she dearly loved.

Private family services will be held at a later date. The family asks that if you wish to give a memorial, they be given to St. Peter’s Hospice, 2475 Broadway, Helena, MT 59601. Please visit to offer the family a condolence or share a memory of Mary.
