Barbara A. Harchenko, 85, of Lewistown died Sunday evening (Aug. 26) at Benefis Healthcare in Great Falls following a short illness. She was born Dec. 27, 1932 in Beach, North Dakota, the daughter of Hugh and Rachel (Zielsdorff) Ross.

Raised on a farm as a “tom boy,” she loved being outdoors with her dad and taking care of lambs, calves, kittens and our dog. At age 6 my mother decided it was time for Barb to take piano lessons, which she did for eight long years. She did not enjoy all of the practicing. She was fortunate she had a very patient mother.

She received her education in Beach, graduating from high school there, attended Walla Walla College in Washington and the Bismarck, North Dakota, School of Nursing. She returned to Beach, helped on the farm and then worked in Beach.

On Aug. 2, 1959 she was united in marriage to Clifford Harchenko in Beach. He worked for the U.S. Department of Agriculture SCS, and they made their home in Glasgow for a short time; then Sidney for 14 1/2 years. They joined the Eastern Star Lodge Richland Chapter #62.

Their children Paul and Ruth both were born in Beach, North Dakota. They later moved to Baker for one year, and then to Lewistown. Barb was active in the Zion Lutheran Church, and a stay at home mother. She was the organist for over 40 years at Zion Lutheran Church and the Order of Eastern Star. She also played for many weddings and funerals.

Clifford retired in 1989, and the two of them spent time with their children and grandchildren and enjoyed fishing and camping. He preceded her in death in 2008. Barb continued to live in Lewistown, close to her son. She knitted numerous blankets, loved to play bridge and bake. Her favorite past time was meeting friends for coffee and she loved her dog, Bear.

She is survived by one son Paul (Chris) of Lewistown; six grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by a daughter Ruth, her two brothers and her parents.

Memorial Services for Barbara A. Harchenko will be Saturday, Sept. 1, at 2 p.m. in the Zion Lutheran Church, with committal in the Lewistown City Cemetery. The Cloyd Funeral Home is assisting the family.

Friends are asked to make memorials to the Zion Lutheran Church or the charity of their choice and they may be left at Cloyd Funeral Home. Condolences for the family may be posted online at
