Marie Eva Kovacich, 105, passed away Monday, Aug. 27 at Valle Vista Nursing Home in Lewistown.

Marie was born to Matt L. and Zora (Kombol) Vlastelic on Dec. 23, 1912 in Bribir, Yugoslavia. She came to the United States in 1920. After arriving at Ellis Island, she was quarantined for a month and then came to Lewistown by train and rode a wagon to the homestead at Mecaha. She lived there until June 28, 1933, when she married Joe Kovacich in Lewistown. They lived on the divide, east of Lewistown, coal mining, threshing and logging. In 1940, they moved to the Skaggs Ranch.

They moved to their own ranch in 1950 where they farmed, ranched and logged. Marie had a huge garden and she was always working; especially in the flower and vegetable garden, the orchard and wild berry picking. Her red tulips were well known.

She was able to stay on her beloved ranch, living with her son, Donald until she moved to Valle Vista in June of 2013. When visiting her, you were always given a cup of coffee and asked, “Did you eat?”– until recently.

Marie was preceded in death by her husband; son, Donald; parents; two brothers, Matt and George; and a grandson, David. She is survived by her son, Dean (Dorothy); grandson, Darren (Denise), and great-grandchildren, Devin and Danielle.

Visitation will be at Creel Funeral Home, Friday, Aug. 31, from 5-7 p.m. Vigil Services and Praying the Rosary will follow at 7 p.m. Mass of Christian Burial will be at St. Leo’s Catholic Church on Saturday, Sept. 1, 11 a.m. with Rite of Committal to follow at Mt. Calvary Cemetery. Memorial donations can be made to a charity of the donor’s choice.
